Dec. 1st 1924

My Dear Miss Taft: -

Received your letter and thanks for Joseph's check. It was very kind & thoughtful of you to send it early.

It began to storm Friday morning a little & Sat. morning when we got up there was 15 in. of snow & last night 4 inches more fell it is still storming some & blowing a gale pileing the snow up in large drifts. This is the most I ever saw this time of the year. I surely hope it does not stay as there was plenty of work left to do before winter set in for good.

Joseph finished taking the corn inside Tuesday & has it all husked there was not much to husk but had to go all over it. There was 45 bu. good corn & 60 bu. of small ears that are not filled well. That new land corn was mostly soft so Joseph had to use it up right away. I feel sorry to tell you how slim the corn run. But Ledger & Will Marshall & all of the neighbor's had the same horrid luck. Am glad there is that much of it.

Your Alfalfa field looked fair the last time I saw it. And if this snow stays the way it is now & does not blow off I think it will survive through the winter. This snow came on in the mud after a rain so the ground is not frozen at all.

There was some fall plowing Joseph intended to do but can't now. Also wanted to get our wood under cover & small stuff picked up in the woods. It is a waste of fuel to try & burn if all snow & ice. And there is none to waste or throw away. Wood will soon be a thing of the past on this penn.

There is enough material in that black cloth you gave me for Hazel & dress & bloomers. Am going to make her a sweater out of an old scarf of mine it is one of those fuzzy kinds & I never liked it. But will make her a good warm sweater & save buying one. Roger & Joseph both need new foot wear so Hazel & I will manage with less. And still be comfortable.

I like the way you help Mrs. Stutsman. It is so much better to do things to help people while alive than to heap costly flowers on them after they are gone & can't enjoy them. It is lovely the way some sisters cling to one another. Am sure Rebecca will enjoy her pretty new dress and it will be as pretty as though it was made of the present day materials. It is hard to find pure woolen cloth now. Unless you pay an enormous price for it. And that does not pay for growing children as nothing fits them very long. Can hardly keep Hazel's knees covered up any more. You will be surprised to see how Roger has grown since you left.

It is a pity poor Mrs. Stutsman has to suffer first one thing & then another. Altho she is always patient about everything. How I wish I could run in & do some of her work. It is too much for Alberta along with her school work. And at her age she should be careful. She is a very healthy fine girl. We all love her.

I intended to take that basket of potatoes in with me when I went to T.C. but can't now & don't know how I will ever get there.

Have not did any thing for Xmas yet & can't do much for any one it takes most all we can get to keep warm clothes on & not freeze to death. I enjoy my sheep skin coat.

The little calf is growing fast & is a fine looking young lady.

Well can't think of any thing more. Will we sell any of that corn or keep it all? Will not let any go until we hear from you.

With love
Essie K.

P.S. Had to finish up on different paper.

I can't seem to get settled down to work this fall. Mr. Bee inspector destroyed every bee hive around he could find. There were only a few escaped burning & burying.

Your cherry trees arrived safe & in fine condition also very nice trees. And Joseph has them all set out but could not get them very straight as other trees were not in line. But did his very best with them. He is still working at the corn. It takes a great deal more time this year as it is not very good & he is sorting it as he goes along. There is 25 bu. good & 34 poor but he has to go over all the fodder. The poor corn can be feed to animals but not soft enough to spoil. Cold nights is the blame for that.

Received a very nice long letter from Mrs. Stutsman & was very glad to hear from her. Will try & write before long.

Am sorry you have to go away again this Spring as it breaks into your much needed vacation. And after cherries are off it leaves you so little time to rest. I don't know how you can be brave enough to face a lot of teachers & speak your piece. I never could do it. Would fall into a heap & melt through the floor.

Joseph will call on Mr. Ayer's as soon as possible. And I will let you know what he says. First thing we know Spring will be here.

I had to get new batteries for the phone so that was .90 more.

Oh! yes I nearly forgot. Mr. and Mrs. Eiman are going to celebrate their silver anniversary Sat. evening. We are invited to go so will try & get up there. Every one donated a dollar so she will get some very nice silver. About 50 or 75 guests will be there. Will let you know all about it.

With love Essie.

Old Mission, Mich
Oct. 31st 1924

My Dear Miss Taft: - You don't know how grateful I feel to you for sending that check one day early. We had the opportunity to go to Traverse City this afternoon & it was a lovely warm day. And I had all afternoon to do my errands. If it had not of come until tomorrow I could have stayed at home or gone on Lardie's truck. And that makes me feel miserable for about a week. And then I have so little time.

First I went to Mr. Perketts office & as luck would have it he was there. I found that he had sent you a check for 14 bu. Dutchess & 16 Wealthies so I got a check for 27 Wealthies & 27 bu. Winter apples. He explained to me about the misunderstanding. He said when the first 16 bu. of Wealthy apples came in the inspector was there & he culled out every thing with the faintest scab or not bright rosy red. And then all the other apples that came in were classed as No. As so you got 5 bu of No. Bs out of the 16 bu. Which you were paid $1.00 per hundred. But there was no docking on any of the other ones at all. There was 11 baskets left over & we kept them was it all right? Joseph said we could use them another year. I certainly hope things will be satisfactory. I told Mr. Perkett I wished he would write to you himself & explain about the apples so as there would not be any doubt about things.

The Morgan cider apple check came to $20.65 and I did not feel like having so much money around so deposited it in the bank to your credit. Enclosed you will find the receipt. The cider apples that Joseph hauled down to Old Mission came to $7.95 & with the $5.45 all ready on hand I did not see how we would need it all. And I did not want to take the money home & wait for any answer to your letter. Which would be another week. The paint cost .85 so only got 1 quart. And was sorry afterwards that I asked for it.

.85 paint $10.00
$3.00 h wages 4.55
.70 twine $ 5.45
$4.55 expenses 7.95
$13.40

There is $13.40 on hand here now. Will I keep it all? Please try & mention in your next letter.

Mr. Zoulek would like his money soon as he could get it. You have all the weigh bills & there was only 27 bu. winter apples that you did not know about. Mr. Kroupa received your check & thanked us for it. He said you were very honest & I am always very glad to hear that. And tell others the same thing myself.

The lugs hae been hauled away during the past two weeks. Forrest fires are dreadful around here they have been in the Walker woods & this afternnon Mr. Ashmore's woods were on fire. They called for Joseph to come & help fight it but he was in town with me. If it does not rain I don't know what will happen. It certainly must rain & this wind go down or we may all burn up. I should not write this. Perhaps you will not believe it but the wind blew sand so hard & thick that I had to take all of my bedclothes out & shake the sand off from them about noon. I never saw such a wind. Fire fighters were out for two nights now at Walker's to keep fire under control. I hope it does not get at the Stutsman place for it would burn even to the buildings. If ever it rains again Joseph must put up eve spounts over there so as to have a supply of water on hand in case it is needed.

Alfalfa is standing still it is so dry it can't grow. Well I went to the .10 store & got this stationary & it is very poor. Some day I hope to be able to afford some better. But this does answer the purpose.

I must get ready for bed as I am very tired tonight. Just pray for it to rain I am. You don't know how much we need it. Roger & Hazel intend to write you a letter some day soon.

I hope Mrs. Stutsman was not offended at me. I have never heard from her. But perhaps she is busy the same as I am. Will write again before long.

Lovingly yours, Essie.

My Dear Miss. Taft: - We received your letter before this could get to the mail box. And thanks a doz. times for your kindness of sending the check early. Now I can get to T.C. during vacation time. You are so thoughtful & kind sometimes I feel as though I do so little for you in return.

My the weather is dreadful cold & snowing every day. People said we were going to have a green Xmas but I think it will be a good white one. Please be careful Miss Taft & don't fall on those slippery streets. I have to be very careful when in town or I would go sprawling quite often.

Joseph had 24 bu of corn & 12 of oats ground for stock. So much of the grain passes through whole when not ground & it surely does the animals no good that way. The grinding of feed came to $2.00. Mr. Burton did the work.

We got a small box of Harvel condition powder for cows & horses. Baby cow is thin & does not eat her feed or grain as she should & several people have told us this is what they give their cows. She has began to eat better already & hope she will improve. Stock is the same as people are they loose their appitite when standing around. Condition pow was .30.

I certainly thank you for my gift for the whole family enjoys it. I read two stories in the last one today. But I think it rather expensive for a gift. I do love to read & now when both children goes to school it is quiet & I enjoy it much more than ever.

Hazel is well again & I am thankful for that. Her face was not swollen very much so she may have had a cold instead of mumps. But hope it was that.

I feel so sorry for Mrs. Stutsman if I could run in & help her as she used to me. Is it her same old trouble? She used to be so well when on the farm it is a pity she can't stay here for I know she enjoyed her quiet home life here much more than in the city. But it isn't the things we like best that we get the most of. I know that is my case.

I wish you had your new car to enjoy this winter. It would save you a great many cold rides & be much more comfortable.

Mr. and Mrs. Eiman gave us a very nice set of silver salt & pepper shakers. I am very much pleased with them. It is something I can keep a long time.

$2.00 grinding of grist
.30 Harvel's cond. powder
.15 for 10 lbs. salt $12.00 on hand
$2.45 2.45 expenses
$ 9.55 to your credit

Dec. 22nd 1924

Much love from Essie.

P.S. I am glad you ejoyed what I gave you. It was such a small ammount. Hardly a good taste I have more for you when you return in the Spring.

My Dear Miss Taft: - It is about time I wrote to you again so thought that I would get busy tonight & say a few words. There is not any news to tell so don't know what to write about.

Joseph set the currant bushes also the quince as you wished him to. The weather is cold & very little snow falling. It rained most all of our first snow off so the cars are going the same as in the summer time. The snow was gone by the time we rec'd your letter so have not been after the windows yet. Joseph will not undertake going after them with the wagon as the roads are so rough they would be all smashed up before he would get them out here. We need them now because it is cold most of the time old north wind howls good & hard. Had a dreadful wind storm Sat. & Sun. The Alfalfa field has a very light covering of snow. Hope it does not freeze to death this winter. That is why it is so hard to have a good catch of seeding as a rule the heavy winds blow the fields bare in patches most every winter.

Miss. Taft would you care if Joseph would get bran & cotton seed instead of oil meal as the cows won't eat the oil meal noway he gives it to them. He intends to get some barrel salt too he thinks they don't eat enough of this rock salt & that is partly the reason they mince around & not eat as they should or drink water. Some days they won't touch the water after he goes to the pains of warming it for them.

If Mr. Burton grinds any grain Jos. intends to have a little corn & oats crushed for animals as occasional feed to help things along.

Have you heard from Mrs. Stutsman of late? I must ans. her letter before long but am so busy I neglect it.

Hazel has been exposed to the mumps & has one large jaw so expect she will miss a little school. Now when Santa is so close at hand I would rather she were not at home. I intended to make new clothes for her old doll & make that do her instead of buying new. Roger & Hazel both thank you for the paper they have enjoyed them very much these long winter evernings. Hazel declares she will pick lots of cherries next summer to pay you for the postage on them. I hope she feels that way when the time arrives.

Well it is my bed time & I still have some work to do. We paid Mr. Lardie for the delivery of your trees & he only charged .50 for it.

$12.50 on hand
My Dear Miss Taft: - I did not intend to write for another week as there has been no news to write about. But today we were going over to Charlie Cooper's to spend the afternoon & took a short cut through the corn field and found the bee inspector had come through & broken into Stutsmans wood shed door & took your bee hives & all the racks & frames out into the field & burned them partly up so you can never use them again. He came here a week ago Sat. while were were to T.C. attending to apples & so forth and asked Roger if you had any bees & the child said no. So he went away. But he must of found out from some one about things & went over there last Friday the 7th & did his dirty work. I would like to know who told him where those things were. If he had of asked we would have unlocked the door & let him inspect things but to leave things open for hunters & prowlers to destroy makes me plain mad not angry. Things are laying piled & chared up out in the corn field.

If you say so I will inquire about him & ask him what business he has breaking into peoples houses like a thief. Joseph hauled corn home from there Thursday & everything was allright. We haven't time to go over there every day & watch the house. I do wish people would use common sense. Jos. nailed things up again.

Had a good rain & a little snow. Mr. Ritchey said the trees had been shipped a week ago when we saw him. So Joseph is getting the ground ready for them. Also husking corn along as he can. Your corn is far better than Will Marshall's is but not very good at that too much rain & cold weather but thankful for not having soft corn like we had 7 yrs. ago. Always lots to be thankful for.

Am going upstairs tomorrow & see if I can find enough material in those pieces of cloth you gave me for Hazel a woolen blouse to wear to school. She is doing nicely with her school work. Roger has to study very hard poor boy looks tired lots of nights.

Well it is past my bed time but knew I must tell you about those hives. Tomorrow morning I would not have time.

With love, Essie K.

Oct. 19th 1924

My Dear Miss Taft: - I think it is about time for me to write you another letter so here goes.

The weather has been beautiful but no rain for some time. New Alfalfa needs rain very bad or it will never have roots enough to stand the long cold winter that is before us.

There was 43 bu. of Wealthy apples & 3130 cider at .35 they would bring again as much now as they did then. The horses have not been shod but Joseph intended to have the winter cider apples down to the harbor I think they are .65 a hundred now.

We go the oats from Mr. Kroupa & they are very nice 50 bushels at .55 a bushel. Joseph has most of the apple trees cut down & dug out. He tried to husk corn but stalks were too wet. The corn is not very good as the cold weather kept the ears from filling out there are lots of missing kernels. But of course there is come good ears too. The corn down at the woods is the nicest & best of all.

Joseph wanted me to mention to you about having the fodder cut. He thinks it would not be a very good plan as it does not seem to cure out as other years. Weather has been nice but not the drying kind.

Would I be asking too much for to ask you for a quart of brown paint for the other room. In the Spring I will not have time to do any extra work so would like to do every thing I can now while I have the time.

The 3 bed room windows & the north window in the dining room are 5 ft 3 1/2 inches long & 2 ft 5 inches wide. That would be the windows most needed. The window in the south end is protected some by the porch.

I will be glad to collect for the apples & bank the money for you. But did not have the slips when I was in town two or 3 weeks ago. Roger went to Mr. Zoulek's & got them yesterday. He drove past twice & did not stop so thought it high time to get them.

If the price of food keeps growing I don't know what will happen to the poor people. I am thankful I have as much food in cans as I have put up 12 quarts of sourkraut yesterday now I have finished all but your cucumber preserve. Will get at it before long. Hope I have not forgot any thing. The children will be very glad to receive the papers & thank you for your kindness.
My Dear Miss Taft: - Am going to try & write you a few lines today as it is Sun. I have been very busy most every day even to Sunday's trying to get my work caught up. Had the Ladies Aid last Wed so that took considerable time to prepare for it. There were 14 grownups besides some children.

I never told you that Mr. Seth Tompkins died the same afternoon you left. Ledger's wife has a new son and Mrs. Holmes Willobee has a new daughter. Or did that happen before you left.

The Wealthy apples has been picked & there were 43 bushels of very nice ones went to Perkett. Mr. Zoulek has not brought us the cider check yet. So I will wait until he does & then try to attend to them as you wished. Joseph kept an account of Wealthy cider as we were not satisfied with Dutchess weight bill. There was 82 bu of W. ciders I don't know how these will weight up. We will wait & see.

Had a light frost last Mon. night & the corn over to Stutesman is cut but part of this on the newly plowed ground is soft yet so it will have to stand for a while.

Joseph does not think he can move those larger trees as they will only die. He would if he thought it would be worth while but fears not.

Have added 2 qts. of tomatoes & 1 qt. pears with crushed pine apple for flavoring. They are very nice that way. I buy one can of crushed pine apple & add it to about 5 quarts of pears. I hope you will like yours. Have not made any cucumber pickle yet but hope to. That ought to help a little more to your Spring store.

Am very glad jelly was all right & you were pleased with it. I did not expect you to pay for that cream & pinch of butter. Am always glad to try & help you by doing little things.

Roger & Hazel wishes for me to thank you for the papers as they both enjoyed them greatly. Roger intended to write you a letter but is so busy with his school work that he has very little time for himself. Both children think & speak of you very often.

Mr. Hamilton has been here 3 times to get us to buy his farm & this time Joseph told him plain enough so I guess he won't ask again.

I can't think of any thing else. Only Mrs. Lardie is having lights installed in her home.

Lovingly Essie
It is so hot tonight I am all most cooked looks like rain. Alfalfa is coming along some of it has 4 leaves now. Dutchess apples have gone to market. And the hay is taken care of.

Jos. hired a man for 1 day to help with the hay & wages is $3.00 per day now & during apple time.

There is a blacksmith down to the harbor now so Joseph will take the team down before long & have shoes put on them.

I don't know if Joseph will undertake what we were talking about or not. He talks to me as though it would be a big bite to try & chew. I think we could manage by careful planning & being saving. But it is up to him. Thought I had better mention his feeling to you.

I have added 1 qt of peaches, 1 pint mustard with califlower, cucumber pickles & 1 pint of plumb preserve to your box down cellar. Have some more to put in after while.

There was 14 bu. of Duchess apples that went to Perkett & 2770 lbs. cider apples to Morgan. Mr. Zoulek brought us weigh bill from Morgan & receipt from Perkett. What will I do with them. You never said anything about it. Will send them to you if you care to have me. Please mention.

Mr. Zoulek & his family got most of the peaches but I got a few.

Your lantern & oil can that was left on the back porch was taken up stairs & stored until you return in the Spring.

You will think I am a dreadful eater when I tell you I have 27 qts of beans & 33 pints of corn up. My cans will soon be full & I will be thankful as I am tired of canning every day.

Well must get ready for bed. As ever.
The frost did not injure the seeding but Jos. will have to order 5 bales of hay in order to get through.

He will try to get the new land plowed this week. Most everyone is just planting even now but ours is up. The Ohemes look beautiful just in full bloom now. A few trees in the hollow have a few frozen buds but not enough to ammount to any thing.

Well I am in a dreadful hurry. I have got to be in Traverse City at the hospital by 9 o'clock this morning. Gertrude has got to have another operation. We don't know how she will even stand it because she is so week & run down. The doctors found pus in her abdonmen yesterday & don't know where it comes from. Of course she is in the __ __ too & that only makes it worse for her. You don't know how I dread this day. But must go as poor Freeman can just walk a little now. And he looks just dreadful bad. I hope for the best.

Well good bye dear Miss Taft & I hope you will be here with us all soon. I will feel better after I have a good visit with you. I have $15.75 here from corn.
Oct. 31st 1932

My dear Miss Taft:-

I waited for a letter from you for quite a while and I should have written just the same. Its so hard to know what to do these days it seems as tho' Mr. Lardie would like to have a few friends & customers left. If he doesn't treat the Christopher's on the square he is simply done there and that means about 7 or 8 thousand crates or more right there also Homer Willobee. I tried to tell Clayton that our contract called for 50% down on our cherries & he never keept his part of it because we got .02[?] down and just $50 over and we didn't borrow that as we never got an advance as they call it. Got that when we settled up with them. Clayton claims that was an old contract but I soon showed him it was not as I've keppt all of our old ones. He felt pretty cheap about the letters he wrote to you when I got through with him. I said in good plain english that it was nothing but a dirty rotten shame the way you have been treated when you worked so hard for their interests I told him that you didn't get your advance because you expected to go to the poor house the next day but supposed you was only getting what was coming to you. And also by selling to Morgan you saved [$].02 per lug on hauling thats more than we did. He is just running a big bluff. I know the way he spoke he intends to wait until you get back & talk things over that is what he told me. He spoke first about Jim Griffin and then mentioned about writing you and thats what made me try to explain your side of the deal as much as I could. I told him also of how loyal you had been to him and his company by not selling your cherries to every one else even tho' you might have gotten a few cents more. We could have sold about 200 more crates for [$].60 per crate too and didn't as we still had a little faith left in the canning factory. You may feel like giving me a good booting but you are too far away just now and by next Summer you will forget. That is the way children usually feel if they get by for a few days without their punishment. We don't know what he will do about us we simply won't take our little savings and hand it over. Joe told me he would serve out time in jail first let Lardie feed him we told him so too. But don't think they will try to do a thing because they can't I believe if the contractors got together and stick they could get more. But so many people don't care about the other fellow. Jim paid just half so why should we pay. That still stings Clayton Some one besides the farmer is making the money.

I felt like sending you a telegram Sat. but was afraid I'd scare you to death a fellow hardly knows what to do. I often wish we could drive down to the little cottage for a chat. But suppose it would be pretty cold & unwelcome there right now.

Roger has been back for about 4 weeks and has been working for Mrs. Ashmore but has finished there now.

Roger intended to send you a greeting from Berrien Springs but couldn't remember your street number. So brought it home I'll give it to you some time. He has always been very fond of you since he was a tiny boy. As for a steady job he could have worked there all winter for a small salary but Joe needs him here too as he still works at the school house.

Lillie was up a while this afternoon and told me about their large party & barn dance they gave about a week ago. We were invited but didn't go Joseph doesn't dance so of couse I never do. Hazel Gillmore took cold and has had a very bad sore throat. Suppose she got warm from dancing and took cold as they danced in the barns and it must have been quite cold out there when standing around.

Mrs. Lardie & Mrs Mills are living together at Ida Lardies home suppose they will stay there for the winter. Mrs. M. has been picking up potatoes or do what ever work she can find to do.

Its much colder today & has snowed or misted all day so a fire feels pretty good. Ive sewed today have made a new house dress Still have another to make yet and lots of sewing for Hazel.

We simply don't like our new mail system at all. Sat. my letter was left so had to take it to O.M. Roger's mouth is much better had to have the doctor clean the wound and pack cotton where the teeth came out. They had been filled & cared for but couldn't save them. Its too bad for one so young to loose teeth

This letter is a crazy mixed up mess about the time I try to write some one keeps talking to me.

I hope all goes' well with you this winter. We all think of you real often and mention your name but will have to be content with an occasional letter now & then until next Summer.

As ever wtih love.

My dear Miss Taft:

Your letter came today so will hasten to reply as I know how very anxious you must feel.

I'm not at all surprised at Clayton Lardie because he isn't fair with any of us. Last Tuesday Jos. was called to Traverse City as a witness for Jim Griffin as you know Jim got $200 from Lardies on his cherries last Summer and this year after Clayton told him he would take it out of the 1932 crop Jim sold to M.C.G. So Clayton sued him and had Jim figured up for $218 as they had charged him interest on the $200. Finally the jury decided on the case & Jim has to pay just $100 instead of $218 Mr. Foot one of the Jurymen stuck for Lardie or Jim would have had clear sailing. Clayton has lost lots of friends and also some of his best customers this last year. We got $50 from him at the time we drew our [$].02 because we felt sure we had it coming as he paid us [$].03 cash for the few red Jackets we sold to them. But just got the [$].02 on our lovely sweets and sour cherries. I certainly would write them a good stiff letter and not be in any hgurry to give your money away. And tell him how about Homer Willobee and Harry Christopher that got [$].03 or more. I'm sure your cherries were as nice as theirs. Just be thankful you have a job that pays well. I feel sorry for these poor farmers who have had hail & wind storms some years a freeze and now this mess. With nothing to help them selves you can't sell any.thing to help out. During the trial Jims lawyer asked Clayton how about the others that had advanced money and Claton said he had settled with them so you can see by that what kind of a fellow he is. I nearly forgot about this but Jos. is sitting here and wanted me to be sure and mention this part of it. Why didn't they talk to you while you was here?

Miss Taft I have watched and waited for a few words from. you every since you left am glad the weather is cooler as you can work in comfort.

I canned 60 cans of corn and 12 qts. of sweet pickles for one resorter and along with the many extra things of my own I've been very busy. I'm so glad I had extra work this summer as it has helped us so much to keep all ends up. have did some sewing but have lots more to do yet. I baked 250 biscuits for the Old Mission Supper and 310 for the Supper at our own church since you left. I'm all feed up on that for a while the next time they ask I'll suggest some one else try the fine job.

Jos. had 165 bu. of corn this Fall from our field so feel most thankful for that most everyone has nice crops and got 8 cuttings of Alfalfa and still have green meadows. Even tho' some things look bad. The Lord has blessed us with lots of good food for winter.

I'll be anxious to hear from you to know what you are going to do but please don't be too hasty they will be more afraid of you than Jim because they knew he was having a hard battle to get on.

Hope you keep well and if I hear any thing deffinate will write you at once.

With love Essie

{Please write some times won't you.}
Yes your corn was finished last Sat. Max & Curt Brother There faces was so sore and cut with stalk's and dead tired every nite. The corn was so big and heavy. Max cut the string a foot longer then last year and had splice them all nearly to get the around shock's.

Max picked pears Saturday before the fair He got $1.90 out of them. He went to town to see about them on friday. Lardie diden't seem know was he was going to do. Can or not. So the only place was Joe Perkett's So he took them on Saturday and they were fillid up with pears. People that were hauling in got out of there trucks and started sorting So Max had wait till Monday to get his crate's. That he barrowed from Fay Dohm.

Yes Ronald enjoyed the fair very much mainly the horses, and sure had a lot of them. He had two rides on little shetlands that are in a ring for kids to ride. Max took a hold of him so he wouldn't fall off. He said no daddy, and pushed his hand away, and said giddap pony. He had two rides on merry go round. He did not care for anything else that there weren't a horse in it.

I am still canning have 66 quarts of tomatoes 20 bottles catsup. Going to make chill sauce. & Indian relish. besides 4 bushel peaches coming.

Max hasen't had time to finish kitchen yet.

Max has roof on shed and lack 1 strip to finish.

I am glad alberta enjoyed the tomatoes Ronald sure thing ever thing of his ball. He has to have it under bed ever nite. He was pretty lonesome Rebecca. Becky away away he say.

Hazel Kitchen is going to school I hear.

It is colder & snowing again. I hope we don't get snowed in again like we was a while back.

The Record Eagle has been discontinued so won't have the pleasure of saving the clippings for you. I rather enjoyed it.

Mrs. Lardie has a new Radio & invited us up Tues. Evening to hear it and also have supper with them. I wish I would talk like she does I would have a lot company then. We had a very nice time & a fine Supper. She isn't very well again. Am afraid if she isn't careful some day will be the last one. Her heart work so hard you can notice her whole neck throb every time the heart beats. I didn't hear any more about sales than I had already told you about.

Jos. Hasn't the remainder of corn husked but will let you know when he does. How much more there is.

The new magazine just arrived so had to take time to look it over so now will try & finish this letter to you. I know we all will enjoy the reading so much.

Am very glad to hear of your finding sale for the rugs. All I have left is a spread wish I could sell it and use the money towards an oil stove which I will need badly next Summer. As I will need something at the other place & to use here when not in use there in order to save fuel I must have one of some kind.

Roger says he would be glad to receive a set of those questions. He will answer your letter before long. He has covered 106 pages of Algebra it is a little easier for him. Some times he gets pretty tired of it. But I urge him to keep going. Sister Angeline would like to take him & help him thru' school but I won't let him go. It would be like prison here to me without my son. He is taking music lessons again is doing fine. When he has that to fill in spare time it helps to keep him satisfied at home. He hopes to be able to play in public affairs at the church within another year.

Gertrude Leighton is going to be married this Spring poor foolish little girl is all I have to say about it.

Haven't heard any wood cutters on the shore property yet and people says there won't be any either unless they fork over some money.

Was glad to know what Santa gave you. Will tell you what he gave me.

A lovely linen Buffet scarf from sis
2 cork table or hot dish protectors
a small white dish pan
Ladies Home Journal from you
A pieced quilt top from Aunt Alice
12 Handkerchiefs
A pickle dish
A nice crocket bag.
A pair of silk hose too

Don't you think he was pretty good? I bought very little for any one as I have so many places for the money to go. Had to go to the dentist a week ago & have a nerve taken out of a tooth & then filled so that was a nother slice to pay.

There is lots of diphtheria in T. City so I don't like to go there very much.

Can't think of another thing to write so will say good night to you. Wish you a very Happy New Year

With love Essie K
The stock is comfortable this cold weather that is some consolation.

Joseph went to Traverse last Friday & got the grain also brought Mrs. Stutsman's apples in. They have been packed all fall & waiting so at last they have gone. It saved paying some one else. He and Charlie Lannin went together. Chas. has to have his horse shod so Jos. had Queen's shoes put back on as the roads have been full of ice. Joseph held the horses & sent Charlie in to the office with the order so that is how it has his name signed to it. He never lets any one else drive your horses out side of the family.

There has been a lot of work done on the roads since you left. They are very much wider now & underbrush all cut down. You won't know them that is why our taxes are so high. They are several dollars higher than last year. We pay to the same place as before to Mrs. Bursau

Joseph just[crossed out] had[crossed out] had just the one key to that padlock.

Mr. George Lardie wrote to us wanting to know how many cherry trees we have on the farm. Did he write to you also? I wonder what the idea is. Most every one here has received the same kind of letter. With a stamped envelope for a reply.

Have lots of clippings for you this time. So my letter will be short or I will have to pay extra postage. Lovingly Essie
